“Hallow and Amen are both Catholic and packed with features. Hallow has the widest range of content, from prayers and Bible stories to music and games, which makes it a strong choice for churches and families, but at $69.99 a year, it's hard to recommend for personal use. Amen is completely free and includes devotions, sleep stories, and journaling, but with so much going on, it feels busier and less calming than the others.”

I am a published writer, educator, and lifelong woman of faith. I begin each morning in scripture, journaling and meditating on what I can carry it into my day. My writing credits include Wonderful Works, AbbaKids, Window Seat Audio Stories, Nature Friend Magazine, and Children's Ministry Magazine, alongside a long career teaching and coaching families in early childhood settings.

The biggest differences come down to cost, tradition, and how much each app tries to do. Pause is my favorite. It's simple, beautiful, and completely free, with 1, 3, and 5 minute sessions that are easy to fit into any day, though people who want lots of features may find it too limited. Soultime is just as beautiful and the easiest place to start, with short guided meditations and a personality test that points you toward the right ones, but full access costs $5.99 a month. Abide has a calming, low-stimulation design and is the best of the paid apps, but nothing in it is free, so you're paying $39.99 a year before you can try anything. Reflect is free and non-denominational, with sessions up to 15 minutes and a progress tracker, but its design and audio aren't as polished, and its focus on streaks won't suit everyone.

“The only people who might not like this app are those that have trouble being still, though it might be helpful. There are limited features, which I like, but other people might want more.”

✓ Would keep using Design 10/10
+Pause is the only app in the group that brings together a 10/10 design, everything for free, and a place in my routine I'd keep. Abide matches its design but puts the whole app behind a paywall, and Soultime is just as beautiful but charges $5.99 a month for full access. Pause's 1, 3, and 5 minute sessions are short and clear, which makes it easy to fit into a busy day, while Abide didn't make its session lengths clear. It's also simpler and calmer than Amen and Hallow, which have so many features they can feel busy, and its non-denominational approach makes it a good fit for more people than those two Catholic apps.
–Pause offers fewer features than the others. Hallow has a much wider range, with prayers, meditations, Bible stories, intentions, and reflections, and Amen includes devotions, sleep stories, and journaling, so people who want variety may prefer one of those. Its sessions top out at 5 minutes, so anyone looking for longer meditations might choose Reflect, which runs up to 15 minutes. It also centers on one practice, pausing and being still, which may be harder for people who struggle to sit quietly.

“The music and sound effects weren't the highest quality. A lot of the app was centered around tracking and streaks, and some people might not be as interested in that.”

✕ Wouldn't keep it Design 7/10
+Reflect offers the widest range of session lengths, from about 2 and a half minutes up to 15, so it works for a quick moment or a longer quiet time. That's more flexible than Pause, which tops out at 5 minutes, or Soultime at 3 to 5. Everything in the app is free, unlike Abide, Hallow, and Soultime, and it's the only one with a tracking feature for people who like to see their progress. It also seems non-denominational, so it may suit more people than Catholic-focused apps like Hallow and Amen, and its calm aesthetic is more soothing than Amen's busier design.
–Reflect's design and audio quality fall behind the top apps. Pause, Abide, and Soultime all scored 10/10 on design, while Reflect scored 7/10, and its music and sound effects weren't as polished. Pause beat it overall by being just as free and non-denominational while offering a higher-quality, more peaceful experience. Reflect's focus on tracking and streaks may also turn off people who want a simpler, quieter practice.

“Not all features are free. This would not be for someone who prefers not to pay for apps.”

✕ Wouldn't keep it Design 10/10
+Soultime is one of the most beautiful apps in the group, tying Pause and Abide with a 10/10 design, and its calming, high-quality imagery is a clear step above Reflect and Amen. Among the apps with a paywall, it's the most affordable at $5.99 a month, compared with $9.99 for Abide and Hallow. Its free version is also more generous than Abide's, which offers nothing free, and it includes sleep stories, meditations, and check-ins. It also has features the others don't, like a personality test matched with meditations, and its non-denominational approach makes it a good fit for more people than Hallow or Amen.
–Not everything in Soultime is free, while Pause, Reflect, and Amen are free from top to bottom. Pause beat it overall with the same 10/10 design, no paywall, and a place in my routine I'd keep, which Soultime didn't earn. Its 3 to 5 minute sessions are also shorter than Reflect's, which run up to 15 minutes, and it offers less variety than Hallow, which includes prayers, Bible stories, intentions, and reflections.

Abide #4
Freemium · abide.com
71/100hands-on score

“It's a paid app, so anyone who doesn't want to pay for a Bible app should skip it. Some more conservative Christians may also be uncomfortable with it, since meditation might carry New Age connotations.”

✓ Would keep using Design 10/10
+Abide's design is one of the strongest of the group. Its calming palette and low-stimulation screens feel much more peaceful than Amen, which was more stimulating, and more polished than Reflect. It's also one of only two apps I'd keep using, along with Pause. For people willing to pay, the $39.99 annual plan costs a lot less than Hallow's $69.99 a year.
–Pause beat it on value. Both have top design scores and both are apps I'd keep using, but everything in Pause is free, while nothing in Abide is. Reflect and Amen are also completely free, and Soultime and Hallow both offer free content, which makes Abide the only app with no way to try anything without paying. Its $9.99 monthly price is also higher than Soultime's $5.99 for full access.

Amen #5
Free · amenapp.org
71/100hands-on score

“It isn't the most calming app as there are so many features. It is also aimed at the Catholic faith, which is fine, but a Baptist or a Methodist might not be able to relate to it as well.”

✕ Wouldn't keep it Design 7/10
+Amen is completely free, which makes it the best choice for Catholic users who don't want to pay, since Hallow puts much of its content behind a $69.99 yearly paywall. It's also the only app in the group with journaling, and it offers a good mix of meditations, devotions, and sleep stories, with short 3 to 4 minute meditations and longer stories for winding down. Compared with Abide, where nothing is free, or Soultime, where full access costs $5.99 a month, everything in Amen is available from the start.
–Amen's design scored 7/10, tied with Reflect for the lowest in the group, and with so many features, it felt more stimulating than calming. Pause, Abide, and Soultime all have calmer, more soothing designs, and Pause beat it overall by being just as free while staying simple and peaceful. Amen is also aimed at Catholics, so Baptists, Methodists, and other Protestants may relate more to non-denominational options like Pause, Reflect, or Soultime.

Hallow #6

67/100hands-on score

“It is quite pricey, so some people might not want to pay for all of the features. It is also heavily skewed towards the Catholic faith.”

✕ Wouldn't keep it Design 9/10
+Hallow offers the widest range of content in the group, with audio prayers, meditations, Bible stories and verses, intentions, and reflections, while apps like Pause and Soultime focus mainly on one practice. Its free content is also generous, including prayers, sleep stories, games, and music, which is more than Soultime offers for free and a big step up from Abide, where nothing is free. For Catholic users, it's a stronger choice than Amen, with a cleaner design (9/10 compared with 7/10) and more variety.
–Hallow is the most expensive app in the group at $69.99 a year, compared with $39.99 for Abide and $5.99 a month for Soultime's full access, while Pause, Reflect, and Amen are completely free. It's also heavily Catholic, so it won't suit everyone the way Pause, Reflect, Soultime, and Abide do, since those seem non-denominational. Pause beat it overall with a slightly higher design score, everything free, and an app I'd keep using.
