Independent ranking. Scores come from the published rubric below, applied to the feature data, not editorial preference. Free-first scoring: paid-only features carry a light discount (about 85% of a free feature's credit). Facts checked against official sites and app store listings, July 2026. She Reads Truth's low store ratings are recent and follow a redesign, so they may move. The devotional Glorify here is glorify.global, not the unrelated glorify.com design tool. Glorify

Glorify is still the Christian Calm. The official loop is a daily quote, a short passage, a guided devotion, then extras: worship playlists, sleep stories, 5 to 10 day audio courses, and a community tab. The site claims 20 million downloads and a 4.9 average across more than a million ratings. People on X treat the daily quote as a morning post. One user said it is not a check-the-box verse hit.

The design is the point. It is pretty, calm, and easy to open when you have five minutes. Streak repair is on the marketing page for a reason. This is a habit app, not a study desk.

The catch is the same as every polished devotion app. A rotating daily is free. The rest sits behind Glorify Plus. App Store listings still show monthly prices around $6.99 to $9.99 and annual around $42 to $70. If you want verse-by-verse study, go to Logos or a paper Bible. If you want a gentle daily rhythm that looks like Headspace, this is still the one.

Best for: Christians who want a Calm-style daily habit: a short devotion, some worship, maybe a sleep story, without opening a study library.

First 5

First 5, from Proverbs 31 Ministries, is built around one deceptively simple idea: give God the first five minutes of your day before your inbox does. Where most devotional apps hand you a single uplifting verse and a short reflection, First 5 walks you through Scripture book by book, pairing each day's passage with a teaching note that explains context, culture, and meaning.

The daily rhythm is thoughtfully layered. The free Start Here teaching grounds you in a few minutes, and when you have more time, optional 15-minute study guides go deeper with reflection questions and background. The whole app is free, which is remarkable given the quality of the writing and the scholarship behind it.

The honest caveat is audience and scope. First 5 is written primarily for Christian women, and while the Scripture study translates to anyone, the voice, examples, and community lean that way. It is also focused: there is no worship music, sleep stories, or sprawling plan library, just excellent, sequential Bible study. If you want breadth or audio-first devotions, look elsewhere.

Best for: Christian women who want structured, book-by-book Bible study in a few focused minutes each morning, completely free.

She Reads Truth

She Reads Truth has one of the most loved editorial voices in Christian publishing, and it shows. The app pairs the full-text Bible with beautifully written, theologically grounded reading plans that walk women through books of the Bible and thematic studies.

Generously, most of it is free. You get the full Bible in multiple translations, a free Bible in a Year plan, highlighting, notes, bookmarks, shareable verse images, and the community layer at no cost. A $2.99/month subscription unlocks full access to the entire plan library, which is a fair price for the depth on offer.

The honest problem is the app itself. It carries just a 3.2-star rating, and reviewers repeatedly cite navigation friction, trouble tracking completed readings, and stability hiccups. The content is excellent, but the container sometimes gets in the way. It is also explicitly written for women, so it isn't the right fit for everyone, and there is a separate He Reads Truth for men.

Best for: Women who want beautifully written, community-driven Bible reading and don't mind an occasionally rough app.

Frequently asked

What is the best devotional app?

By our rubric, Glorify ranks first with a score of 88/100, it pairs a full in-app Bible with pro-narrated audio, guided prayer and meditation, journaling, and hundreds of plans, and it holds a 4.9★ app-store rating. First 5 (82) is the best free pick, and She Reads Truth (74) is strongest for a Scripture-first, women-focused daily reading with a lively community.

What is the best free devotional app?

First 5 is our best free pick: its core daily teaching from Proverbs 31 Ministries is fully free, with only optional paid guides. Glorify and She Reads Truth are freemium, both offer a free layer but reserve some content behind a subscription (about $6.99–$9.99/mo for Glorify Plus and around $2.99/mo for She Reads Truth).

How do you rank these apps?

We apply one public rubric to the feature data: content depth (22%), value (15%), Scripture integration (14%), audio/prayer (12%), community & journaling (12%), design & UX (12%), trust/ministry (8%), and platforms (5%). Paid-only features carry a light discount. No app can pay to change its rank.

Can an app pay to rank higher here?

No. The ranking is earned from the rubric and can never be bought. An app can pay to be included as a clearly-labeled comparison entry, but that inclusion is additive and never reorders or rescores the earned apps.
