YouVersion Bible
YouVersion is the free Bible most people already have, and the audio works in a browser with no account. I played John 1 in the NIV Listener's Bible as a guest. The English audio list shows 25 recordings. The site says 100% free, no ads or purchases ever.
Help docs say audio needs the internet. Offline text download exists. Sleep timer is in the iOS audio help (clock icon), not on the web player. I did not find playlists.
This rank uses our listing score. It is a reader with audio, not a Dwell-style soundscape app. If you want free listen-now on the web, this is the extra name. If you want mixable music and a sleep timer as the product, look at Dwell.
Best for: Anyone who wants to press play in a browser for free, in a Bible they already use.
Through the Word
Through the Word is a guided audio Bible. Every chapter has a short pastor-led guide. Guest playback works: I played Journey 1, Mark Intro, about nine minutes, no login. The site says free forever, no ads, no fees. Donation funded. 19 Journeys on the homepage and in the web app.
Teachers named on the site include Kris Langham and others. YouVersion plans are listed on the platforms page. I did not count 1,189 chapters by hand. Offline was not tested.
If you want to understand the chapter, not only hear it, this is the extra name. If you want a dramatized cast, look at Bible.is.
Best for: Listeners who want a short pastor guide with each chapter, for free, including in a browser.
Dwell
Dwell is still the audio Bible that sounds like a record, not a robot. The site now lists a long bench of human narrators across CSB, ESV, KJV, NIV, NKJV, NLT, NASB, NRSV, LSB, ICB, The Message, plus Spanish and Portuguese. Official stats: 3 million-plus installs, 75,000 reviews. This week people on X are using it for the Bible Recap in a year, and calling the voice options a game changer.
The extras keep growing. Mood playlists, looping a verse for memory, synced text, and as of late August a Hymns collection in Dwell Music, Be Thou My Vision and the rest, scored for rest rather than a Sunday set list.
You pay. After a 7-day trial it is $59.99 a year or $9.99 a month. Duo, family, church, and lifetime plans exist. There is no real free library. That is still cheaper than Pray.com's upper end, so the old 'priciest in the category' line is no longer fair. If you will listen every day, it is worth it. If you want a free reader, YouVersion will speak the Bible too.
Best for: Listeners who want the Bible read well, with music, and who will use it most days, not once a month.
Bible.is
Bible.is, from the nonprofit Faith Comes By Hearing, does something no other app on this list attempts: it puts Scripture, much of it dramatized with a voice cast, music, and sound effects, into more than 2,600 languages, entirely for free. For missionaries, immigrants, and anyone whose heart language isn't English, that reach is close to miraculous.
The core experience is strong. Audio downloads for offline listening, playlists you can build and share, and Gospel films in hundreds of languages make it a serious study and evangelism tool. The dramatized narration in particular brings the text to life in a way flat, single-voice readings can't.
Where it lags is polish. The English-language interface feels dated next to Dwell, reading plans are thin, and there's little of the ambient music or curated mood content newer apps lean on. But judged on its mission, the widest possible access to the spoken Word at zero cost, Bible.is is very hard to beat.
Best for: Anyone who needs Scripture in a specific or non-English language, and listeners who love free, dramatized audio with offline access.
Daily Audio Bible
Daily Audio Bible is a daily episode, not an on-demand library. Guest playback works: I played September 3, 2026, about 35 minutes, no login. The day's reading was OT, NT, Psalm, and Proverb, with commentary after.
Listening is free. The give page shows donation amounts. Account is optional. Channels include Kids, Spanish, Arabic, French, Portuguese, and Chinese, plus chronological. Web player, iOS, Android, and Amazon are listed.
Offline was not confirmed. If you want a shared daily habit, this is the extra name. If you want to pick any chapter on demand, look at YouVersion or Dwell.
Best for: People who want one shared daily episode and prayer, not an on-demand narrator library.
