NeuBible, now relaunched as Mere Bible, is a gorgeously minimal Scripture reader built by former Apple and Yahoo designers. It strips away feeds, streaks, and clutter so you can simply sit and read the Word, and it's now completely free.

Our verdict

NeuBible earned a cult following as the most beautiful Bible app on iOS, a calm, typographic reading space built by ex-Apple and Yahoo designers who believed Scripture deserved better than cluttered feeds and gamified streaks. In 2023 the app was acquired by the team behind Dwell, and in early 2026 it was relaunched as Mere Bible, a nod to C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity. The design DNA survived the transition intact: gorgeous gradients, generous whitespace, and text that simply gets out of the way.

The biggest news for longtime fans is that what was once a paid app is now completely free, with no paywalls and only an optional donation link. You get eleven translations across English, Spanish, and Portuguese, fast full-text search, highlights, bookmarks, inline notes, a home-screen widget, and sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web. It is, deliberately, a reader first, with no commentaries, cross-reference chains, or reading-plan machinery to distract you.

That restraint is exactly why it wins for some people and frustrates others. If your goal is deep study, with Greek word tools, parallel commentaries, and exhaustive plans, you will outgrow it quickly and should reach for YouVersion or a dedicated study app. But if you want to actually sit and read Scripture without notifications tugging at your sleeve, few apps come close to the quiet, considered experience here. Now that it is free, it is the easiest recommendation in its niche.

“The most beautiful, distraction-free way to read Scripture on Apple devices, and now completely free.”
