Bible Gateway is a free online Bible platform offering access to more than 200 Bible translations in over 70 languages. Users can search by keyword, verse, or topic, read audio Bibles, follow reading plans, highlight passages, take notes, and sync their study across devices. The core Bible reading experience is free with no account required.

A paid subscription called Bible Gateway Plus adds an ad-free experience and access to over 60 study tools including commentaries, study Bibles, and Bible dictionaries. The platform is published by HarperCollins Christian Publishing and serves casual readers, students, and serious Bible scholars looking for a comprehensive, multi-translation reference tool.

Our verdict

Bible Gateway is still the search box of the internet church. The homepage calls it a searchable Bible in over 150 versions and 50 languages. Their own X bio still says 200-plus versions. Either way, you type a phrase or a reference and you get a clean hit. People still use it that way: a retired rector repeating a YLT search, a user putting dramatized John on at bedtime.

Plus is the new pitch. The site is running an annual plan under $5 a month, with 70-plus study resources beside the passage, sale through mid-September 2026. That is cheaper than the old $7-a-month copy. Free still works. Free is also still full of ads.

The honest catch has not moved. The free site feels busier than YouVersion, offline is weaker, and the ads push Plus hard. If you need to look up a verse fast, or compare two translations, this is still the workhorse. If you want a quiet daily reader, use something else.

“The search box everyone still opens. Free if you can live with the ads.”

FAQ

How many translations does Bible Gateway have?

What is Bible Gateway Plus?

A paid plan that removes ads and puts 70-plus study resources beside the passage. The site advertised an annual plan under $5 a month in September 2026.

Why does the free app show ads?

The free tier is supported by advertising. A Bible Gateway Plus subscription removes ads.

Can I compare two translations at once?
