Recite
“Say the verse aloud and it scores you word by word, the truest test of memory.”
Recite bets on the one skill most memory apps skip: actually saying the verse out loud. You recite a passage aloud and its on-device speech recognition scores you word by word, then an SM-2 spaced-repetition schedule decides when to bring each verse back. Because recitation is the truest test of whether a verse is really in your memory, this is a genuinely smart differentiator among a sea of typing and tapping apps.
It is free, ad-free, and privacy-conscious, the speech recognition runs on your device rather than in the cloud, and it is the work of a solo developer, David Gibson of Ocho in Aberdeen, Scotland. The combination of voice-first drilling and a proven review algorithm is exactly what you would want in a serious memory tool, and there is something quietly admirable about a free app that takes retention this seriously.
The reasons for caution are all about maturity. The Android app is live but iOS is still an open TestFlight beta, so iPhone users are testing rather than using a finished product, and the app is new enough that content depth, translation options, and long-term support are unproven. On-device speech recognition can also stumble with accents or noisy rooms. For voice learners willing to ride along early, it is exciting; for everyone else, it is one to revisit as it matures.
Is it right for you?
Auditory and verbal learners who retain best by speaking Scripture aloud, and early adopters who want a private, voice-first tool and do not mind rough edges.
You are on iPhone and want a finished app, you memorize in a noisy setting where speech recognition struggles, or you need a large, established verse library today.
